IBA Team excels at European Model United Nations 

  

The Institute of Business Administration (IBA) team participated in the European Model United Nations Conference held at Maastricht, Netherlands between May 16th and 20th and had the distinction of winning six recognitions, the highest by any individual team at the conference. 

Competing at the largest Model United Nations conference of Europe, with representation of over 500 students from all over the world, this was the only delegation from Pakistan to take part in this conference. 

The IBA delegation comprising 9 undergraduate students won the honors of ‘Best Delegate’ and ‘Honorable Mention’. 

The following received the ‘Best Delegate’ award in their respective committees: 

Syed Salman Haroon (United Nations Security Council) 
Maha Arshad (United Nations Security Council) 
Nida Haroon (UN General Assembly 1st Committee – Disarmament and International Security) 
Ramla Ahmad (World Trade Organization) 

The following received an ‘Honorable Mention’ for their performances: 

Syed Naheer Ameer (UN General Assembly 1st Committee – Disarmament and International Security)
Namreen Akhter Syed (United Nations Human Rights Council) 

Model United Nations IBA Karachi (MUNIK) is program in its fourth year which aims at giving the students an understanding of diplomacy and negotiations concerning complex international issues, it not only honed their diplomatic skills but also boosted their confidence at the international arena. During the conference the students studied resolution writing, public speaking and negotiating.

Pakistan Short Film on Drone Attacks wins International Award

 
Karachi: A short film by two students of a Pakistani  on United States drone attacks in Pakistan and its societal affects has won an international film making award.
The film was awarded with Best Audience Award at National Film Festival For Talented Youth Washington, US.
Filmmakers Muhammad Danish, writer and director, and Atiqullah, producer of the short film, are students at Iqra University, the leading private Pakistani management institute.
The 20-minute short film basically involves around idea of assessing social, psychological and economical affects of people from tribal areas of Pakistan.



The film identified problems that families face after becoming victims of drone missiles.



Besides, it unearths line of action of terrorists groups adopt to use victim families for their vested interests.



Despite being chosen for awards, both the students couldn’t be able to attend the award ceremony. They applied for US visa twice but rejected by US Embassy.



“If we get visa then it would be quite easy and helpful to frame our point of view in front of selected youth film makers,” Danish said.



“The film gained interest from the audience across the globe compelling festival administrators to give Audience Award to the film.”

July 13, 2011: Two teams comprising of seven Pakistani students have taken top honors among more than 33,000 participants from 52 countries in the largest ThinkQuest International Competition to date, sponsored by the Oracle Education Foundation (OEF).
ThinkQuest International Competition challenges students to solve a real problem using their critical thinking, communication and technology skills and the students presented solutions using a variety of technologies, including online applications and games, websites, photo essays, online blogs/journals, animations, and videos.
Pakistani students were part of two award-winning teams; six local students Sania, Sadia, Narmeen, Iflah, Rohan, and Ahmed of Generations School created an entry called “Mini Mentors” in coaching of Ms. Aniqa Masroor, while another local student, Taleaa of Generations School, teamed up with students from Singapore to help create an entry called “Obesity.”
“Mini Mentors” was awarded 3rd place in the ThinkQuest Projects event, 12 & under age division. The entry focused on how ants can teach us to deal with problems as a community, through dedicated team work, organization and perseverance.
“Obesity” was awarded 2nd place in the Application Development event, 19 & under age division. The entry focused on raising awareness around weight issues and providing online tools to help people manage diet and general health.

They were particularly excited about exploring the wondrous world of ants, and thoroughly enjoyed themselves in the process. ThinkQuest has truly managed to engage children in positive learning activities by stimulating their creativity and critical thinking skills.”
“The Oracle Education Foundation is please to recognize all ThinkQuest International Competition participants for their outstanding achievements,” said Brad Saffer, Vice President, Oracle Corporate Citizenship. “These students identified real-world problems and accepted the challenge to solve them through innovative, thought provoking solutions. Throughout the process, these students developed skills that will position them for success in the classroom and workplace.”
The winners were selected from 7,603 teams and represented China, Great Britain, Greece, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Moldova, Pakistan, Puerto Rico, Romania, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and the United States.
Prizes for the winners include laptop computers, school grants, and a trip to ThinkQuest Live, the inspirational awards event in the San Francisco Bay Area.
