Pakistan Launches its First Communication Satellite Paksat-1R

Pakistan Launches its First Communication Satellite Paksat-1R

Finally Pakistan has launched its first communication satellite with the help of China.
Earlier it was expected that Pakistan will launch its satellite in second week of August, preferably on 14th of August but keeping in view the weather factors, the launch has taken place.
Paksat-1R is based on DFH-4 platform and will be positioned at 38.0 degrees East. Paksat-1R will replace Paksat-1 which was launched on January 31st, 1996. The DFH-4 (DongFangHong-4) platform is a large telecommunications satellite platform – a new generation of hardware based on high output power and communication capacity.
Paksat 1-R will provide range of services including broadband Internet, digital television broadcasting, remote and rural telephony, emergency communications, tele-education and tele-medicine and hosting of defense applications.
The satellite is equipped with three receiver antennas and two transmission antennas. It can support the transmission of 150-200 TV programs simultaneously to ground users using a 0.45m antenna device. The DFH-4 satellite also includes strong capabilities against hostile interference and jamming.
The satellite will be operated from SUPARCO (Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission) Satellite Ground Stations located in Lahore and Karachi.
Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir said:
The successful launch is yet another shining illustration of the time-tested friendship between Pakistan and China and has ushered in a new era of cooperation in space technology between the two countries. This also marks the next step in taking forward Pakistan’s space Programme “2040″.
Pakistan’s Ambassador to China Masood Khan said:
It is a symbol of Pakistan-China cooperation in the area of space technology. It is the first of the kind to be launched by China and Pakistan. Therefore it establishes a new platform, and marks a new beginning.
Satellite had its first failed launch on February 14, 1996 but this time the control room of the launch centre, in China, said the launch was successful and after 26 minutes, satellite was separated from its carrier rocket and entered geostationary.

Another Milestone Achieved!

Pakistani scientists succeed in mapping genome
Karachi, Tuesday, June 28, 2011

Pakistani scientists have mapped genome of the first Pakistani, while with this historical achievement, Pakistan joins the ranks of the few countries - the US, UK, China, Japan and India - which have successfully sequenced the human genome.

Dr Panjwani Centre for Molecular Medicine & Drug Research (PCMD), University of Karachi (KU) and Beijing Genomics Institute, China, have jointly mapped genome of the first Pakistani, living in Karachi.

Pakistan has become the first country in the Muslim World as well that has mapped genome of a first Muslim man.

This historical announcement was made by Prof Dr M. Iqbal Choudhary, Director International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), KU, while talking to a group of scientists at ICCBS. He said that the first Pakistani genome had been mapped using a newly developed technology ten years after the first human genome was discovered. The PCMD, working under the umbrella ICCBS, had reported mapping of the entire genome of a Pakistani male in just 10 months.

The individual who has been genetically mapped is a resident of Karachi, he added.

“According to the researchers, the newly-sequenced Pakistani genome has uncovered a multitude of ‘Pakistan’-specific sites which can now be used in design of large-scale studies that are better suited for the Pakistani population. The research team was comprised of Dr Kamran Azim, Assistant Professor in the Dr Panjwani Centre for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research and Dr Yong Zhang, head of the genomics department at the Beijing Genomics Institute, Shenzhen, China; among world leading genomics institutions,” he said.

Acknowledging the fact that the complete Pakistani genome has been sequenced for the first time Dr Azim said, “The new thing in the study is the technique which can trace back a mutation to the specific parent. We are still studying the actual genome data itself and how the genetic differences we identified may predispose this particular individual to certain diseases”.

10:15 PM: Heavy rains accompanied with storm. Though it lasted for not more than 10 minutes, but it made sure the stage is completely broken, the sound systems are fully drenched and grounded, lighting and electricity is completely turned off…
10:30 PM: Everything in DHA Hockey Stadium Karachi was wet and down, except the volunteer and participants’ spirits that were as high as ever. Volunteers, organizers, senior citizens, ladies and children – everyone decided and started to rebuilt everything from the scratch.
11:30 PM: New sound system was arranged and installed at the new stage and new generators were connected, meanwhile the 250-feet long Pakistan Flag arrived at the ground.
August 14, 2011
12:00 Night: The National Anthem of Pakistan was rehearsed, with the available crowd of 1,500 Pakistanis.
12:15 AM: Almost an additional crowd of more than 3,500 was still required before the cut-off time of 1:00 AM, to break the earlier record of 5,247 participants. Most of the expected participants either were stuck in traffic, or returned to homes due to rains and storm.
12:25 AM: Everyone in the crowd was requested to text, call, facebook and tweet everyone they knew. People went to neighborhood restaurants, shops, houses, apartments and streets – convincing others to join in… The crowd was determined not to leave before the previous record breaks.
12:30 AM: Almost 2,500 was the additional required number.
12:50 AM: The official count then was 5,580… much more than it was required to break the previous record. People were still joining in.

Pakistan BEATS India...

Another encouraging piece of news that went unnoticed due to lack of proper coverage by our news channels...

Pakistan on Wednesday defeated India 2-1 to win the U-16 South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championship in Katmandu.

Pakistan battled hard to outshine arch rivals India 2-1 in the final to win their 1st ever SAFF U16 Football Championship title on Wednesday at Dasarath Rangsala Stadium, Katmandu.

Goals from midfielder Muhammad Zeeshan and star striker Mansoor Khan proved too much for India to overcome as they went down once again in the tournament to a determined and resolute Pakistan U16 side.

This win marks the first time in five years that Pakistan has won a football event at any age level, since the 2006 South Asian Games football gold for Pakistan U23 under great Bahraini coach Salman Ahmed Sharida, said the information made available here.

The Pak U16 coaching staff of head coach Sajjad Mehmood and Hassan Baloch deserves full credit for the win as they defied all odds and hampered preparations before the tournament to guide the Green Guns to a historic win today.

A large Nepali crowd was in full voice and cheering on Pakistan from the first whistle as the Indo-Pak rivals began another round against each other in football.

Both sides looked determined and focused for the win, but it was Pakistan who drew first blood in 23rd minute as Muhammad Zeeshan’s speculative shot completely fooled India goalie Supritam and found the back of the net to put initial tournament favourites India behind once again. India went in hard again and managed to score just before half time through the impressive and hardworking Daniel Lalhlimpua to equalise.

But 5 minutes into the second half, a goalmouth scramble in India’s box from a Pakistani corner saw Pak star striker Mansoor Khan sneak in a goal and shock India once again. The 2-1 Pakistani lead forced India to go aggressive on Pakistan’s defence and came close a few times. But Pakistani defence led by captain Muneer and goalkeeper Usman Khan held firm as they ran the clock down.

Kalash mythology and folklore has been compared to that of ancient Greece, but they are much closer to [Indo-Iranian pVedic and pre-Zoroastrian] traditions. Khunjerab Pass

Khunjerab Pass

The Khunjerab Pass, at 4,733 meters (15,528 feet), is reputedly the highest metaled, border-crossing in the world. Visitors are greeted with a red sign announcing 'China, drive right', and another green sign saying 'Pakistan, drive left'. A monument declares that the highway was opened in 1982 and indulges in a bit of hyperbole by saying that the pass, is at 16,000 feet (4,875 meters). On May 1, 1986, the Khunjerab was opened to foreigners for travel between Hunza and Kashgar in Sinkiang Province.

It stands over 3,000 metres [9,800 ft] above much of the glacial valley bottoms at its base. More extraordinary is the fact that it is a consistently steep pyramid, dropping quickly in almost all directions.
The north side is the steepest: there it rises over 3,200 metres [10,500 ft] above the K2 [Qogir]. Glacier in only 3,000 metres [9,800 ft] of horizontal distance. In most directions, it achieves over 2,800 metres [9,200 ft] of vertical relief in less than 4,000 metres [13,000 ft].
